ManU ‘need to be in the market’ for strikers like Harry Kane and Erling Haaland

Manchester United ‘need to be in the market’ for strikers like Harry Kane and Erling Haaland this summer, says Red Devils legend

If Manchester United are to reach the next level, they need to be in the market for the likes of Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.

This is the view of Mark Hughes, who believes a top centre forward is the missing piece of the puzzle for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men.

The Red Devils have enjoyed a good season so far as they currently find themselves second in the Premier League and still competing in the FA Cup.

However, a Champions League group stage exit and being 12 points behind top-flight leaders Manchester City shows there’s still some way to go before they can start seriously think about winning the top prizes.

They have some exciting forwards among their ranks but Hughes believes they’re lacking a prolific goalscorer down the middle.

Hughes admitted that veteran striker Edinson Cavani has gone some way to giving the team that focus down the middle but says that he’s not the answer long-term.

On whether they should sign Kane or Haaland, Hughes told Sky Sports: “That’s certainly the type of player they need to be in the market for.”

The former Man United striker added: “They’ve got good quality at the top of the pitch – Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood are highly thought of but, for me, maybe they need Cavani five years ago, when he was in his pomp. They probably got him at the wrong time even though he’s still an outstanding centre forward.

“When I see him playing in this team I think he gives them a little bit more focus… things happen around him.

“The reality with the other players is that they all want to play in another position rather than down the middle. Rashford would prefer to be down the left hand side as would Anthony Martial. Greenwood prefers the right hand side.

“They need to get somebody with that quality to play down the middle to give them that focus.”
